Fantasy Basketball Daily Boxscore Review (10/30/09)

Pretty quiet fantasy night with only two games on the schedule for Thursday, but Friday should be a fantasy feast with 13 games going off.   I have been asked by a few people what formula I use for possessions, so here it is:  Possessions = FGA + TOV + (.4 x FTA) – OREB.  Some people use .44 as the free throw multiplier, I use .4 because it makes the math easier to do in my head.  Dean Oliver uses .4 in his book, so I feel comfortable with it.   No matter what figure you use, the formulas are an estimation.  The only way to get the exact number would be to watch the game and count every possession.  Wish I had that much free time.  On to the boxscores:

Fantasy Studs:   Tim Duncan, Carmelo Anthony, Chauncey Billups, Brandon Roy, Luol Deng.

Fantasy Duds:  Steve Blake/Andre Miller, Richard Jefferson, Tony Parker, John Salmons, LaMarcus Aldridge, DeJuan Blair.

SAS 85 @ CHI 92   Poss:  91   SAS ORtg:  93.4   CHI ORtg:  101.1

SAS:   44.9  eFG%   OReb%  17.8    DReb% 70.6   TO%  14.3   FTR  19.2
CHI:   43.5  eFG%    Oreb%   29.4    DReb% 82.2   TO%  9.9     FTR   22.6

Chicago won this one on the boards with a huge rebounding advantage.  Duncan had 12 rebounds for San Antonio, nobody else on the team had more than 4.   The Bulls had 7 players with more than 4.  Chicago also protected the ball very well with a low 9.9% turnover rate.

SAS Fantasy Notes:  I’d say age caught up with SA on back to backs, but that theory ends with Tim Duncan getting 28pts/16reb/2stl/3blk, although he did only get 22 minutes the night before….D. Blair only 13 min, still 6pt/4reb….Parker looked to be ok after his fall on Wednesday but didn’t put up much of a line, 35min/8pt/3ast….Ginobili 12pt/6reb….Jefferson with another poor outing, 9pt/2reb.  Now that he has a good supporting cast, he may see a decrease in his fantasy stats….Matt Bonner again outplayed McDyess.

CHI Fantasy Notes:  A very balanced team with no fantasy studs in this game, hope this isn’t a trend….Derrick Rose looked good for as much time as he missed.  He got 33 min/13pt/7ast/7reb/1stl/1blk….Deng looked good 17pt/9reb on 8 of 13 shooting….Tyrus Thomas is a better player in real life than in fantasy, 3blk….Noah 10pt/10reb/2blk….Salmons with a 1-9 from three, 3-15 overall….Hinrich a decent night 5-11, 14pts.

DEN 97 @ POR 94    Poss:  87    DEN ORtg:  111.5   POR ORtg:  108.4

DEN:   48.4  eFG%   OReb%  14.3    DReb% 68.9   TO%  9.2   FTR  62.3
POR:   37.7 eFG%    Oreb%   31.1    DReb% 85.7   TO%  8.0  FTR   40.7

This game turned into a free throw shooting contest which was won by Denver.  A combined 90 free throws in this game pushed both teams free throw rate high, but the 62.3 figure for DEN is huge and is rarely seen.  Portland was the better rebounding team, but was the worse shooting team with an eFG% of only 37.7.  Much like last season, Portland is going to be one of the slowest paced teams in the NBA.

DEN Fantasy Notes:  It’s the Melo and Billups show, Anthony with 41pt/6reb and Billups with 22pt/6ast…Nene 7pt/11reb….Kenyon Martin 6pt/5reb…. Chris Andersen 5pt/6reb/1blk….This offense should roll when JR Smith gets back from his suspension.

POR Fantasy Notes:  Aldridge with another disappointing game, 9pt/7reb in 40 min….After exploding in the first game, Travis Outlaw only managed 4 pts on 1-8 shooting….Rudy Fernandez was solid, 22pt/4reb….Oden 6pt/9reb and didn’t help his FT confidence by missing two big ones at the end…. Roy 30pt/5reb/5ast only 1 turnover….Andre Miller clearly isn’t happy coming off the bench, 3-11 shooting, 5 ast.  Given Steve Blake’s performance, it shouldn’t be long before he moves into the starting role….I’m beginning to wonder if Nate McMillan knows what he is doing.   All that underperforming talent.

Fantasy Basketball Daily News (10/29/09)

Only two games on the schedule tonight, but both are on TV in the TNT Doubleheader.  San Antonio is at Chicago at 8:00 EST while Denver travels to Portland for the 10:30 EST nightcap.   I dropped Anderson Varejao and picked up Marreese Speights in the GiveMeTheRock.com keeper league.  I’m gambling on Speights for next year, and I already have Brand, Z. Randolph and J. O’Neal at center so Varejao wasn’t an important piece of the team.   On to the fantasy news:

Fantasy Basketball Daily Boxscore Review (10/29/09)

12 games on the schedule last night and some real fantasy gems out there, some nice rookie showings, as well as a couple of guys who had bounceback performances to soothe worried fantasy owners.

Fantasy Studs:   Brook Lopez, Joe Johnson, Kevin Durant, Danny Granger, Al Horford, Marreese Speights, Jermaine O’Neal, Marcus Camby, Deron Williams, Marc Gasol, Russell Westbrook.

Fantasy Duds:  Tyson Chandler, TJ Ford, most of the 76ers, Al Jefferson, Spencer Hawes, Al Thornton, Andris Biedrins, Anderson Varejao, Charlie Villanueva, the Celtics starters getting pulled in the 4th quarter.

Nice Rookie Lines:  DeMar DeRozan, Terrence Williams, Omri Casspi, Jonny Flynn, Ty Lawson, DeJuan Blair and Stephen Curry.

IND 109 @ ATL 120   Poss:  101   IND ORtg:   107.9   ATL ORtg:  118.8

IND:   60.3  eFG%   OReb%  18.2    DReb% 81.0   TO%  24.8   FTR  28.7
ATL:   56.9 eFG%    Oreb%   19.0    DReb% 81.8   TO%  9.9     FTR   24.1

The stat that has to jump out here is the turnover rate for Indiana.  You simply can’t win a game if you turn the ball over on a quarter of your possessions.

IND Fantasy Notes:   Granger was listed as doubtful but showed no effects from the bruised heel, play him with confidence…Hibbert only got 25 min due to the Pacers going with the running game trying to catch up…Murphy 14pts/10reb/7ast/5tov…Ford (1-9) was terrible and was outplayed by Watson (7-8)…Rush was weak 6pts/3ast/3tov.

ATL Fantasy Notes:   Josh Smith dunks led to a 7-10, 18pt night…Horford 24pts/16reb…Johnson shot well 10-21, 25pts/6ast/4stl…Atlanta really spreads the bench minutes around with the five reserves getting 11, 14, 15, 16 and 14 minutes each, not much fantasy production there….I hate playing against Joe Johnson in daily cash games.  He can drop a huge game on you without making a sound.

PHI 106 @ ORL 120   Poss: 95   PHI ORtg:  111.6    ORL ORtg:  126.3

PHI:   54.5  eFG%   OReb%  21.6    DReb% 76.5   TO%  13.7   FTR  26.9
ORL:   65.4 eFG%    Oreb%   23.5   DReb% 82.4   TO%  15.6    FTR  17.7

Philadelphia just didn’t play much defense in this one.  The weren’t physical enough letting Orlando shoot 65.4 eFG% and hardly ever fouled the shooter as evidenced by the 17.7 free throw rate .   Philly is going to have to contest more shots in the future.

PHI Fantasy Notes:  Brand was terrible and could be a fantasy bust this year.  This Princeton offense just doesn’t suit him, or any of the 76ers for that matter…Same for Iguodala 8 pts/5reb/6ast.  Iggy plays more on raw talent than some fancy system…Williams 18 pt/4reb/4ast…Speights, 26pts/5reb, where did that come from?…Dalembert only 16 min…Thaddeus Young 8pt/4reb/3ast …I like the team concept, but it is a killer of fantasy stats.

ORL Fantasy Notes:  Howard 9-11, 21pt/15 reb in only 29 min…Ryan Anderson impressive 16pt/5reb…Carter average 15pt/3ast…Nelson 21 min and Jason Williams 23 min, not good for Nelson’s fantasy value.

CLE 91 @ TOR 101   Poss:  97   CLE ORtg:  93.8   TOR ORtg:  104.1

CLE:   40.4 eFG%   OReb%  24.1    DReb% 83.7   TO%  14.4   FTR  28.9
TOR:   48.7 eFG%   Oreb%   16.3    DReb% 75.9   TO%  13.4   FTR  37.3

As usual, Toronto got outrebounded and will likely lose that battle all year with Andrea Bargnani at Center.  Cleveland had a horrible shooting night (40.4 eFG%, 34.9 FG%).

CLE Fantasy Notes:    I’m not impressed with Cleveland, it is still a one man show which will never beat a five man ‘team’…James 23pt/11reb/12ast … Varejao with a dud, 2pt/4reb, 5PF…Shaq 25 min 12pt/7reb, is he getting old?…Mo Williams only 2 ast in 40 min (only 3 vs. Boston) and his fantasy value is pretty much just 3’s and points.

TOR Fantasy Notes:  Bosh 21pt/16reb…Bargnani 28 pts but only 5 reb and 1 blk…Calderon 11 ast but only 5 pts…DeRozan nice rookie debut 8pt/5reb/1stl/1blk… Jarrett Jack 31 minutes.

CHA 59 @ BOS 92   Poss:  87   CHA ORtg:  67.8   BOS ORtg:  105.7
