Fantasy Basketball Daily News and Notes (6/27/11)

David West (NOR) – West will opt out of his contract with the Hornets and test free agency.   He’s leaving $7.5 million on the table by declining the option on the final year of his contract.  West is also rehabbing from a torn ACL.  Quite a risky gamble with this move.  Another Hornet, Aaron Gray, also decided to opt out of his contract.

Qualifying Offers Extended – Daequan Cook (OKC), Dante Cunningham (CHA), Sonny Weems (TOR), Jeff Green (BOS).

Contract Options Picked Up/Extended – Leandro Barbosa (TOR), Goran Dragic (HOU), James Jones (MIA), Eddie House (MIA).

Qualifying Offers Extended – Thaddeus Young (PHI), Spencer Hawes (PHI), Marc Gasol (MEM), Aaron Brooks (HOU).

Player Contract Options Exercised/Extended – DeMarcus Cousins (SAC), Tyreke Evans (SAC), Omri Casspi (SAC), Zydrunas Ilgauskas (MIA), Ronny Turiaf (NYK), Jeff Teague (ATL), Sam Young (MEM), DeMar Derozan (TOR), Darren Collison (IND), Tyler Hansbrough (IND), Paul George (IND), Ryan Hollins (CLE).

Kurt Rambis (MIN) – Rambis is out as head coach in Minnesota.  Probably good news for Kevin Love’s minutes.

David Kahn (MIN) – It looks like the Wolves have selected an ineligible player in Tanguy Ngombo.   Ngombo reported his age as 21, but he’s probably 26 or 27.  Not sure why the Wolves would take this kind of reckless risk when there were so many better, and safer, options out there.  Mr. Kahn, Google is your friend, use it.

NBA Trade News

Pretty big three way trade in the NBA today between Charlotte, Milwaukee and Sacramento.  Here’s how it breaks down:

Charlotte gets Corey Maggette and Milwaukee’s #7 draft pick.

Milwaukee gets Stephen Jackson, Beno Udrih, Shaun Livingston and the #19 draft pick.

Sacramento gets John Salmons and the #10 pick.

The trade brings up several questions including who will now man the point for the Kings?  I’m guessing that Tyreke Evans and John Salmons could form a decent backcourt for the Kings, but I probably wouldn’t go that route.  Most likely the Kings bring in a PG to pair with Evans.

Beno Udrih’s value takes a hit since he likely moves to a reserve role for the Bucks behind Brandon Jennings.  Stephen Jackson should start at SG with Carlos Delfino gaining a larger role.

Charlotte traded away their primary scorer in Stephen Jackson, so Corey Maggette could get a serious look and be a nice fantasy player next season if he’s depended on to provide scoring.

More Qualifying Offers – Nick Young (WAS), Reggie Williams (GSW), Luc Richard Mbah a Moute (MIL), Gary Forbes (DEN), Wilson Chandler (DEN), Arron Afflalo (DEN).

Vince Carter (PHO) – The Suns will buy out 34 year old Carter for $4 million which will allow him to catch on with another team.   He’s not much of a fantasy option, but don’t completely write him off if he lands in a great situation.   I’ve seen mention of the Bulls being interested, but that depends on how much cap space they have left.

Dwane Casey (TOR) – The Toronto Raptors hired Casey as their new head coach.  He’s a defensive minded coach, which is something the Raptors desperately need.   On the down side, I now have to learn another spelling of ‘Dwane” or is is Dwyane or Dwayne?  One name, so many possibilities.

Boris Diaw (CHA) – Option for $9 million was picked up and he’ll be back with the Bobcats next season.

Fantasy Basketball Daily News and Notes (6/18/11)

Congrats to the Mavs on their 2011 NBA Championship!  It’s great to see Mark Cuban finally get that title.   No doubt that LeBron is catching the blame for the Heat loss, but Miami should be a stronger team for all of this next season.   It wouldn’t surprise me at all if they completely dominated the league this coming season.
