Fantasy Basketball Daily News (1/14/10)

I wonder if the Nets regret firing Larry Frank yet.   They haven’t gotten any better under Kiki Vandeweghe and it’s starting to look like everyone is just mailing it in every night.  Devin Harris is too good to be putting up such ugly stats.  He should be the primary scoring threat and leader of this team, yet he just coasts every night.  Hey Devin, you heard of the lottery and this guy named John Wall?  Keep coasting and you might be watching him next year – from the bench.  Brook Lopez is pouting now that Yi Jianlian is stealing some of his thunder.  Chris Douglas-Roberts and Courtney Lee simply look like they have no clue what to do while they’re on the court.  It makes you wonder if Vandeweghe has any idea how to run a team.  At least Frank had a plan, and given ample time with this young group it might have worked.  It certainly wasn’t going to be any worse than the disorganized, unmotivated product that Vandeweghe is putting on the court.

Fantasy Basketball Player News and Notes:

  • First, I’d like to lead off with a shout out to Rafer Alston.   The only player in the NBA who can play 28 minutes against the Warriors and only score a single point.  One lonely free throw.   Seriously?  Thanks a lot Skip, you owe me $57.50.
  • Jodie Meeks might actually get a shot at significant minutes now that Michael Redd is gone.  If you are in a keeper league, need 3’s and have an open bench spot, give him a look.
  • Tim Duncan got the night off on Wednesday.  DeJuan Blair got the start and had a big game putting up 28 points and 21 rebounds.  Given Blair’s ability, Duncan may get a lot of off days as the playoffs approach.  Daily cash game players will definitely want to remember this one and keep an eye on Duncan when he plays back-to-backs.
  • Dwyane Wade played through his wrist injury and put up 35 against the Warriors.
  • Allen Iverson was able to go 34 minutes against the Spurs.  His knee is still going to cause some missed games, so make it a habit to check his gametime status if you plan on starting him.
  • Aaron Brooks played 59 minutes in an OT win against Minnesota, putting up a career high 43 points.  He can have some big games, but most of the time he’s just too inconsistent to use in daily games.
  • Vince Carter missed his third game with a shoulder injury.  J.J. Redick got another start but didn’t do much with it, scoring only 13 points on 2-9 shooting in 34 minutes.
  • Ty Lawson missed his fourth game with a sprained ankle.
  • Matt Barnes has been a great pickup since getting inserted into the starting lineup.  He recorded 28 points, 9 rebounds and 3 steals in 37 minutes against the Nuggets.
  • Kobe Bryant played through his back spasms Wednesday and his overall stats reflect that he was still hurting.  He only scored 1o points, but made the shot when it counted, hitting one with 28 seconds left to put the Lakers ahead for good.  He’s like a good baseball closer.
  • Josh Howard looks to be recovered and ready to return to the starting lineup.  He played 36 minutes last night scoring 18 on 7-16 shooting.  He’s a cheap salary in most daily games, so give him a play.
  • Brian Scalabrine got a start with Rasheed Wallace and Kevin Garnett out.  Scary.
  • Steve Nash got seven stiches in his mouth after an elbow from Earl Watson.  He played through it and should be fine for his next start.
  • Tyler Hansbrough got a start against Phoenix, but ended up being a tease getting only 10 minutes of action.
  • Mike Dunleavy had a good game Wednesday scoring 30 points.  He does this about once a month and is still shooting just 40% this season.  I imagine there will be a flood of people picking him up only to drop him next week.  Don’t waste your waiver claim on him.
  • Brandon Roy sat out most of the second half with a tight right hamstring.  His MRI showed a strained hamstring.  Check his gametime status for the next game.  Jerryd Bayless may see some extra minutes if Roy can’t go.
  • Rudy Fernandez returned for Portland and was able to log 15 minutes.  He is a good gamble if you need a player for the second half of the season.
  • Andrei Kirilenko will get a start Thursday in place of C.J. Watson who is recovering from a viral infection.
