Fantasy Basketball Daily News: Crimson Tide Edition (1/07/10)

The big day is finally here:  Alabama vs. Texas for the National Championship.  I’m an Alabama alum and our last championship was in the 1992-93 season with Gene Stallings as head coach.  With student tickets, I was lucky enough to catch every home game that season and it was a great ride.    I moved about 1000 miles away three years ago and I haven’t had a chance to make a single game this season, but luckily almost all have been on TV.  It’s been a fun ride this year too, with plenty of ups ans downs.  The Tide lost their bowl game last season to Utah and now I’m thankful for that loss and the lesson it presented – if you don’t focus and prepare, you will lose.   Hopefully, Nick Saban will have them ready for what will surely be a tough matchup versus a solid Texas team.  Beer on ice, no basketball tonight.  Rolllll Tide!

Fantasy Basketball Player News and Notes:

  • Delonte West played last night, Gilbert Arenas didn’t.
  • Ron Artest played 35 minutes on Wednesday and looks fully recovered from his concussion and elbow injury.
  • Pau Gasol missed again and I still haven’t seen a definite return date set for him yet, although with Lamar Odom filling in well I think they will rest Gasol as long as possible out of caution.  Gasol says the left hamstring problems is different from the right hamstring that caused him to miss 11 games.  He also said he’s never had hamstring problems before.  Welcome to getting old, Pau.
  • Rumor is that Javaris Crittenton had a loaded gun in the confrontation with Arenas.  He’s likely to get a suspension, not that anyone had him on a fantasy team anyway.
  • Baron Davis is finally getting his act together and living up to potential.   He’s one of my favorite daily plays.
  • Al Thornton has played 6 and 9 minutes in his last two games and Blake Griffin is on the way.  Thornton looks to be a drop.
  • Has Yi Jianlian finally figured it out?  I’m not a believer, but he’s making it difficult lately.
  • Jarvis Hayes returned Wednesday and got 20 minutes off the bench.  Chris Douglas-Roberts better step it up if he doesn’t want to lose minutes to Hayes.
  • Blowout win for the Hawks last night and no starter got more than 30 minutes.  Jamal Crawford was the beneficiary of garbage time putting up 29 points.
  • Rajon Rondo showed no lingering effects of a hamstring problem, especially on his last second layup that sent the game to overtime.  He played 50 minutes.
  • Paul Pierce also returned and managed to go 43 minutes.  It was a really inconvenient time for an overtime game for the Celtics.
  • Jermaine O’Neal returned from a one game absence to go 35 minutes putting up 14 points, 8 rebounds.
  • Earl Boykins got the start in place of Gilbert Arenas, but Randy Foye got 29 minutes compared to Boykins’ 19.
  • Jose Calderon returned from a hip injury and managed 25 minutes, putting up 5 points and 8 assists.
  • Vince Carter is struggling with an ankle problem that seems to be limiting his productivity.
  • Deron Williams missed Wednesday with a wrist injury.  He may be back Friday.  Ronnie Price got the start.  Congrats to Sundiata Gaines, who saw his first NBA action.
  • Carlos Arroyo will be with Miami for the rest of the season after having his contract guaranteed.  Not sure if Rafer Alston is still in Miami’s plans.
  • Kevin Garnett is probably out another two weeks.
  • Jason Maxiell got the start in place of Jonas Jerebko.  No injury, just a shakeup in the lineup to try and end the Pistons losing streak.
  • Lester Hudson was waived by the Celtics so that Boston would have an open roster spot, if needed.  Hudson was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
  • Kendrick Perkins was able to play last night after suffering food poisoning.  Eddie House may return from the flu for the next game.
  • Danilo Gallinari is dealing with a sore right shoulder, but expects to play Thursday.
  • Kevin Love took a fall on his left knee but stayed in the game.  Check his status for the next one just to make sure there is no lingering problem.
  • Luol Deng has been playing with a fractured left thumb.
  • Rodney Stuckey suffered a knee injury last night, no word yet on the severity or if he’ll miss any time.
