The Miami Herald reports that the Heat have signed point guard Carlos Arroyo.  I don’t think it is much of a hit to Mario Chalmers fantasy value as the Heat simply needed a veteran backup just in case.

I often disagree with Henry Abbott of Truehoop and many times don’t find his daily columns worthy of the praise heaped on them (Most of them are just cut and paste jobs).  But what I think his article really shows is that the ‘+/-‘ stat is a really flawed statistic.  It is akin to wins and losses for pitchers.  Yes, your pitcher can give up 7 earned runs, pitch like crap and still get the win or he can pitch a complete game one hitter and lose 1-0.  It all depends on the other guys on the pitchers’ team who do the hitting.  The ‘+/-‘  stat is  80% dependant on everyone else but the player you are really trying to evaluate.  If you want to evaluate Kevin Durant, there are other stats that do a much better job.

DallasBasketball.com reports that Shawn Marion is dealing with a mild strain to his right calf and might miss a little time.

ESPN with an injury update on Derrick Rose.  He should be back at practice by the end of the week.

CBS Sports with a look at the rotation in Portland and how playing time may be distributed.

I see Kevin Garnett is looking better in the last couple of games, but I’m still not drafting him in any of my leagues for a couple of reasons.  First, he just goes too high because there is always that guy in the league who doesn’t realize he is hurt.  Second,  I still don’t think he gets more than 30 minutes a game even if he is healthy.   Boston needs him for the playoffs and Rasheed will want/get at least 25 minutes a night.  And then you also have the ever present injury risk.  He just isn’t worth where you have to draft him.

I think Andre Iguodala is going to be somewhat of a disappointment this season now that Brand is back and Andre Miller is gone.  Iguodala’s game just doesn’t fit Jordan’s system.  Iguodala gets by many times on raw athletic ability, kind of like Josh Smith.  It will be interesting to see how he handles the structured offense, as well as having Brand return as a focal point.  Given his ADP, I have been avoiding Iguodala this season.

The replacement referee experiment is going to fail miserably once the season starts and the games mean something.  They are simply going overboard trying to control the game and players.  Professional players aren’t going to settle for being treated like that.

CelticsBlog.com with today’s entertaining fantasy headline:  “Brian Scalabrine Could Have a Breakout Season”.  CelticsBlog.com barely beat out this headline from masters of the obvious, Lawrence Journal (Kansas):  “LaFrentz’s NBA Career Likely Coming to an End”

Jason Williams is making a strong case to win the backup point guard position over Anthony Johnson in Orlando.

David Andersen of the Houston Rockets could be a nice last round gamble if you have the bench space.  He put up 17 points last night.  He’s from Australia and I haven’t seen him drafted in any of my leagues because I’m not sure that anyone has ever heard of him.  He has a nice offensive game and should get minutes with Ming out.

Micheal Redd got 21 minutes of action and says he knee felt good.  His shooting wasn’t too bad either going 7-10 for 18 points.
